At 7:00pm on the first Thursday of every month, a diverse group of acoustic guitarists and music lovers gathers at ELM'S PUB ON MAIN STREET, NEW ALDAYA LIFESCAPES in Cedar Falls, Iowa. At any given gathering the group may include professional musicians, clergy members, third-shift workers, high school students, and university professors. Sometimes a short list of official business needs to be addressed, but the meeting quickly becomes a song swap.
When Rick Vanderwall and Rick Price decided to start the Cedar Valley Acoustic Guitar Association in 1999, their goal was to create a community of guitar players. Today the Association is the premier talent showcase in the Cedar Valley.
"We were two guys who used to meet up at Bob's (Guitars) and look at guitars. We both loved playing, but we spent a lot of time in our basements alone," says Vanderwall. "We wanted to create an organization, we wanted to create a community of guitar players, and that's how we got started."
After two summers of successful performances at Overman Park Band shell, Community Main Street in Cedar Falls proposed the group do an entire summer series, and “Movies Under the Moon” was added. This year marks the 15th summer collaboration between Community Main Street and the Guitar Association.
